Description
The DUKW, unofficially known as Duck, is a six-wheel-drive amphibious modification of the 2.5 ton CCKW trucks used by the U.S. military. Primarily designed to resupply amphibious forces, it was used for the transportation of goods and troops over land and water. Initially rejected by the armed services, the DUKW proved its seaworthiness when an experimental unit rescued 7 stranded Coast Guardsmen during heavy winds, rain, and heavy surf. Adopted by the armed forces, the vehicle saw extensive use during World War II and the Korean War.
