M109A7 Paladin Self-Propelled Howitzer

The M109A7 is the newest version of the M109 Paladin self-propelled howitzer in U.S. service. Formerly known as the M109A6, the newest Paladin shares improved, common components with the Bradley fighting vehicle such as the engine, transmission, and tracks. The newly shared components result in a faster, more manoeuvrable predecessor while maximizing cost savings in production, parts inventory, and maintenance personnel.

The newly upgraded M109 Paladin’s turret features a developed electric drive, rather than its previous hydraulic drive system, delivering faster , consistent automatic rammed rounds for velocities and better accuracy. Installed with a 600-volt onboard power system to accommodate additional armor and future networking technologies , the M109A7 can sustain a one-round per-minute rate of fire and a maximum rate of fire of four rounds per minute.

Manned by a crew of 4, the M109’s indirect fire support is armed with a 155mm main gun in addition to a .50 cal M2, or a newly deployed CROWS remotely controlled heavy machine gun.
