product description
The Soviet ZSU-23-4 “Shilka”, named after the Russian river, is a lightly armored self-propelled, radar-guided anti-aircraft weapon system (SPAAG). The ZSU-23-4 code of the AA self-propelled Shilka’s abbreviation stands for Zenitnaya Samokhodnaya Ustanovka, Russian for “anti-aircraft self-propelled system”, signifying the number of 4 gun barrels equipped with 23mm guns.
Brought into service in 1965, the Shilka replaced the Soviet and others’ radar lacking ZSU-57-2 predecessors. The ZSU-23-4 was deployed to provide direct AA canopy for military facilities, troops, and mechanised brigades, widely seeing active service with pro-Soviet nations against the IAF during the Yom Kippur, Iran-Iraq War, The First Gulf, with some deployed units in Lebanon.
Modernised versions of the Shilka SPAAG were upgraded with Identification friend or foe (IFF) system, two additional “Igla” air-defence missiles on each side of the turret, 81mm smoke grenade launchers, laser sensors, as well as an improved weapon radar system.
