Soviet Project 1204M “Shmel”, Bumblebee in Russian, is a small gunboat developed during the Cold War. Shmels were built between 1967 and 1972, with 118 ships deployed with many still being operated by the Russian Federation.
The smaller Shmel boats were intended to patrol and engage enemy ships in rivers and lakes, as well as assist ground troops with artillery and machine-gun fire, and transport armed personnel through crossing rivers.
Its armoured, 27 meters long and 4 meters wide, armoured hull is equipped with a bow mounted 76.2mm PT-76B amphibious tank gun. The boat’s middle lane is equipped with a 140 mm BM-14, 17 tubes, rotating multiple rocket launchers. The stern’s hull was also equipped with a twin mounted ZPU 2M-3 25mm AA gun, as well as deployable naval mines.
