The PT-91 Twardy (Polish for hard) is an upgraded, domestically produced main battle tank based on the former Soviet T-72 MBT. The Twardy was locally designed to retro fit its upgrades to better level up and adapt tanks to the reality of modern warfare. The vital lack of an accurate fire control system and main gun stabilization were settled with the DRAWA new dual-axis stabilized fire-control system, and a new automatic loader. Lacking armour issues were resolved with the new ERAWA dynamic, enhanced reactive armour along with replacing rubber skirts with anti-HEAT steel. Low mobility issues were done by installing a more powerful engine and transmission system, to better adapt to the Twardy’s increased weight.
Additional protection upgrades were further enhanced with the replacement of the old style rubber skirts, a thermosmoke, fuel used, generating device and turret mounted 24 smoke dischargers capable of deploying smoke screen, anti-personnel fragmentation, or a non-lethal tear gas shield for protection.
Manned by a crew of 3, the PT-91 is armed with the same T-72 used 2A46 125 mm smoothbore gun, a 7.62 mm PKT coaxial general-use machine gun, and a turret mounted 12.7 mm NSVT anti-aircraft heavy machine gun.
Mainly deployed by Poland and exported to Malaysia, the Pt-91 saw recent combat in Ukraine during the Russo-Ukrainian war.
