PLA ZTZ-99A Chinese Main Battle Tank

The ZTZ-99A, or Type 99 is a Chinese third generation main battle tank (MBT). Mass produced to replace the aging Type 88 MBT for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), the type 99 combined modular composite armour and tandem-charge defeating Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA) on its angular turret considered as a rapid modernization for the PLA.

Based on the extended length Soviet T-72 lower chassis, the Type 99 is solely operated by the The People’s Liberation Army Ground Force (PLAGF) with more than 1300 units deployed, forming the core, highly maneuveredable, PLA heavy combined arms brigades..

Manned by a crew of 3, the ZTZ-99A’s angular turret is armed with a 125 mm autoloaded smoothbore gun capable of firing a range of ammunition as well as anti tank guided missiles (ATGM) through its barrel, with a 12.7mm coaxial and turret mounted Chinese manufactured W85 heavy machine gun. The turret also hosts an improved fire control system, friend and foe acquisition and track system, and a digital map interface for global positioning system.
