product description
The M551 “Sheridan” AR/AAV (Armored Reconnaissance/Airborne Assault Vehicle) is a light tank developed by the United States. The Sheridan was designed to be deployed by parachute and had the ability to ford and traverse rivers. Armed with a technically advanced but troublesome 152mm gun, the Sheridan was capable of firing both conventional ammunition and the MGM-51 Shillelagh guided anti-tank missile.
The M551 Sheridan was rushed into service with the United States Army in 1967, seeing extensive combat in Vietnam at the time with evident problems in its survivability and reliability. Upgraded Sheridans later saw deployments in Europe, Korea, Panama, and Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm.
Put aside large number of Sheridans were kept in service at the National Training Center (NTC) at Fort Irwin, deployed as simulated Soviet armored opposition force (OPFOR) to train U.S. military units on simulated tank on tank armored combat, until 2003.
