Description

The US M48A3 Mod.B medium battle tank was an upgraded version of the M48A2 MBT, retrofitted with a diesel engine due to the high consumption and flammability risk of a conventional gasoline engine.

The upgraded M48A3 Mod.B benefitted from redesigned fenders and mudguards, armoured boxes around the taillights, and fitted with a re-designed commander’s cupola, allowing more room in comparison to the previous M1 cupola. Due to being converted from previous models, some details varied among tanks with some having either three or five support rollers, early type headlight assemblies, as well as the Mod A turrets and different cupola styles.

The tank was armed with a 90mm M41/T139 gun, a .30 cal coaxial machine gun, and a .50 cal heavy machine gun in the commander’s cupola.

Manned by a crew of 4, the M48A3 Mod.B saw extensive action with the US military during the Vietnam War, with over 600 tanks deployed with US forces during that war.
