Description

The M113A1 is a fully tracked, lightly armored personnel carrier (APC) developed to replace the M59 mechanized infantry carrier. The M113 was the most widely used armored vehicle of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. The M113A1 provided protection, to both crew and passengers, to break through the heavy jungle thickets. Firing from the vehicle, to attack and overrun enemy positions, was possible with the added external gun shields bestowing the M113A1 with the nickname ACAV, armored cavalry assault vehicle.

Although being long replaced as a front-line combat vehicle by the M2 and M3 Bradley, the M113A1 served in a wide variety of roles such as armored ambulances, mortar carriers, engineer vehicles, and command vehicles with over 80,000 M113s in over 50 countries, making it one of the most widely used armored fighting vehicles of all time.
