product description
The King Tiger, Tiger II, was a German Second World War heavy tank. Officially designated as the Panzerkampfwagen Tiger Ausf. B, the Tiger II was also informally known as Königstiger, German for King Tiger. Primarily issued to heavy tank battalions, the Tiger II first saw combat during the Allied invasion of Normandy, Eastern Front, till final combat days in 1945.
The Tiger II was the successor to the Tiger I heavy tank, merging thick armour with a front sloping structure just like the Panther’s medium tank design. Being one of the costliest German tanks to be produced at the time, the King Tiger weighed almost 70 tonnes protected by 100 to 185 mm frontal armour. Design contract awarded both to Henschel and Porsche companies, the Tiger II prototypes featured distinct turrets, along with main transmission and hull features, with the Henschel’s designed turret winning the production contract.
Manned by a crew of 5, the Tiger II was armed with a long barrelled 8.8 cm KwK 43 anti-tank cannon, in addition to 2 or 3 air-cooled general-purpose GG34 machine guns.
