Description

The AMX-50B was a French heavy tank, designed by the state’s weapon design bureau, immediately after the Second World War. The tank incorporated many advanced features from the King Tiger and Panther tanks such as a fuel injection Maybach V12 engine, torsion bar suspension system, and overlapping road wheels for better mobility.

Armed with a 120 mm gun, in a 2 part turret, the AMX-50B was designed as a response to the perceived threat posed by the Soviet heavy tanks, such as the IS series of tanks and the T-10.

With five prototypes only produced, the project was cancelled in the late 1950s, due to economic and political issues, causing serious delays in development and rendering the concept of heavy tanks obsolete.
