product description
The Douglas TBD-1A Devastator is a modified twin-floated American torpedo bomber of the United States Navy. First entering service in 1937, the Devastator was considered as the most advanced aircraft flying for the World War II Navy. Manned by a crew of 3, pilot, bombardier, and gunner, the metal manufactured TBD-1A was the first monoplane in the United States Navy. The Devastator performed well early in war, most notably in the Battle of the Coral Sea against the Imperial Japanese Navy.
Later battles, the Battle of Midway, the Devastator earned an infamous record for disastrous performance with zero torpedo hits, with only 6 Devastators making their way back safely to their carriers. Although sustaining heavy losses, the Devastator’s wrong performance was due to many well documented defects of the deployed US Mark 1 torpedoes, not detonating upon hitting its target.
