Description

The Russian 1S91 SURN is a mobile radar station which was part of a Soviet mobile surface-to-air missile system designed to protect targets against low to medium level air attacks. Being part of a complete defense battery system the 1S91 SURN, NATO code name “Straight Flush”, was mounted on similar tracked vehicles much like the Soviet SA-6 air defense system, 2K12 “Kub” NATO code name “Gainful”.

The 1S91 was equipped with two radars. A 1S11 target acquisition & distribution radar and a 1S31 continuous wave illuminator, in addition to an identification friend or foe system (IFF) and an optical sight. The acquisition range for the SURN was reported to be 50 KM for a Phantom II sized target. While being in service with both Syrian and Egyptian forces as early as 1973 during the Yom Kippur war, the 1S91 KURN remained in service till date in some countries with recent deployment in both Syria and Yemen.

Trumpeter‘s 1/35 1S91 KURN consists of 16 light grey plastic sprues, a slide molded lower hull & chassis, 1 PE fret, and a decal sheet. The kit features crisp details as can be seen on the new tooled lower hull, the intricate details on the radar system, and finely molded lower hull railings. The faithfully reproduced 1S11 & 1s32 radars can be built in either the deployed or stored position with the central cylinder hidden inside the chassis. The included link & length tracks consist of long straight lengths with the addition of several individual track links for an easier assembly. The PE fret contains parts for the various parts and screens visible on the vehicle’s intake ducts.
